Many of you have seen the term “variant” floating around and wondered what in the world it means. Variant is a term that has been used in several different contexts so in this post I will attempt to sort that out and perhaps even clear things up a bit!
Variant has been used to describe:
- Wardrobe cards with the same number and photo, but
- with completely different materials, or
- with different patterns of the same material
- Base and chase cards with the same number and photo, but
- with a Silver Brooch foil stamp, or
- with a Gold Thistle foil stamp
- Autograph Cards with the same signer, but with different signatures
In this first of three installments, we will discuss wardrobe cards with the same number and photo.
VARIANT: something that is different in some way from others of the same kind
A wardrobe card with the same number and photo, but with completely different materials is called a variant. Or in other words a wardrobe card that has been created using different materials from the same costume.
VARIATION: something that is similar to something else but different in some way
A wardrobe card with the same number and photo, but with different patterns of the same material has a variation. I know, I know, SO close, but not quite the same…

The fabric shown on the right was used for wardrobe card M37, the binder exclusive card. Pre-orders of the binder were so popular that they exceeded the amount of beige cotton apron fabric available. This is why there are some M37 cards that feature khaki wool from her trousers. ~ George Nadeau

These wardrobe cards are NOT variants because they are the same material. The fabric shown in both of these cards come from skirt on Jenny’s costume so they are actually variations of the same material. Most variations occur because of how and where the material was cut for placement in the wardrobe card.
So far the following wardrobe cards have been identified as having possible variations.
(You will notice most of these are patterned materials.)

The costume department provided us multiple pieces of solid brown fine wool for two different looks in the continuity book. We used the pieces to create two different cards, M14 and M26. ~ George Nadeau
